Territory for learning and mastery

The Design program at Universidad de los Andes is structured around three core emphases: Creation, Project, and Research. This framework allows each student to develop their academic profile by focusing on two of these three areas. Within this structure, courses offer multiple approaches to each emphasis, understanding design as a diverse and transversal field. In courses oriented toward Creation, projects are developed based on the possibilities of a specific medium, encouraging exploration that integrates human, historical, and technical dimensions. Through these processes, thinking materializes into craft and visual expression. The medium ceases to be merely a tool and becomes a territory for learning and mastery, where the designer gains control over resources, techniques, and languages that allow them to realize projects with intention, judgment, and sensitivity.

The Spell

2021-2

For the Andrags—a drag modality that does not seek a complete transformation toward the feminine—sheer stockings function as a vehicle for a sensual illusion. Through them, performers construct a character that does not correspond to their physical body but aligns with their stage identity, challenging the boundaries of binary gender classification. This garment was conceived to occupy a space between curiosity and discomfort, exploring the blurred margins of sensuality and generating attraction that defies normative expectations of the body and desire.

The piece was made in lycra, incorporating three-dimensional organic structures created through material exploration with hot silicone poured over fruit surfaces such as oranges and pitahayas. The inherent limitations of the material—beyond its temperature—were embraced as part of the process, allowing fluidity, chance, and loss of formal control to generate unpredictable textures. In this way, the materiality itself translates the tension between discomfort and fascination, turning irregularity into an expressive resource.
